Despite his finishing position, I think BIG BAD BEAR showed plenty of promise on his chase debut at Perth last time. Brain Hughes gave him a lovely introductory ride that day allowing him to pop away at the back of a competitive field and build his confidence. I wouldn’t read too much into the bare result and even trainer Nicky Richards has stated he was pleased with how he jumped and the run should set him up perfectly for the rest of the season.
He goes today in the 12.50 and it looks a hot race but that experience should stand him in good stead as they encounter some tough fences today at Carlisle which will take some jumping. He was more than useful as a hurdler and is expected to be better over a fence.
