Trainer Henry Candy has paid tribute to stable star Limato after confirming his retirement at the age of eight.
The fan favourite ran twice in 2020, winning at Newmarket in June, before finishing fifth in last month’s Park Stakes at Doncaster.
Connections had been hoping for one more run in the Challenge Stakes at Newmarket on Friday, but a bruised foot means he has been withdrawn.
Limato has now been retired after winning 14 races out of a possible 33, earning connections over £1.4million in prize money.
Speaking about Limato, Candy said: “He’s been a big part of the yard for a long time. I suppose his July Cup victory was probably the outstanding performance, but I thought his run in the Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar as a juvenile was absolutely extraordinary.
“Limato would have to be way up there – when everything was in his favour with the ground and everything, he was brilliant.
“He had a pretty amazing strike-rate and a fantastic turn of foot.”
