Trainer Gordon Elliott has big plans for new recruit Presenting Percy, as he eyes tilts at the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National.
The Philip J Reynolds-owned nine-year-old joined Elliott’s stable earlier this year after leaving Pat Kelly’s yard and he will be hoping for a return to form, with his last win over fences coming during a red-hot addition of the RSA Chase in 2018.
Indeed, Presenting Percy’s last outing saw him fall two out in last season’s Gold Cup, although he had been in contention for victory before that moment.
A run in the Cheltenham Festival showpiece appears to be the aim for Presenting Percy again this season, although Elliott also believes the gelding could be well suited for a tilt at the 2021 Grand National at Aintree.
Speaking on Betfair‘s Racing Only Bettor Podcast, Elliott said: “Presenting Percy is not your typical big three-mile chaser. He’s a short-coupled horse but he’s got a real deep girth, so loads of room there for oxygen, and a good heart.
We’re happy with what he’s shown us at home. He’s being trained for the Gold Cup at the moment, but I definitely have the English Grand National in the back of my mind.
“I think he’s the type of horse who would suit the race. He’s got a lot of class. He travels. He jumps.”
