Muir piles on praise of St Leger chance

William Muir says Pyledriver may be the best horse he has ever trained and hopes to see him live up to his potential in September's .

The three-year-old was sent off at double figures odds for the Great Voltigeur Stakes at on , a result of having disappointed when finishing 11th in the on his previous outing.

However, Muir's charge made a mockery of his sizeable price as he overcame a slow start to power clear of runner-up Highland Chief to claim the Grade 2 prize, his second win of the season having won the Edward VII Stakes at in June.

Despite the impressive nature of his Knavesmire success, Muir believes the best is still to come from Pyledriver and is hopeful he could head to on 12 September for the last of the season.

Last year's Great Voltigeur winner Logician went on to claim the St Leger and the Hungerford handler hopes Pyledriver can do something similar, despite a few concerns over the step up in trip.

Muir told the Post: “The plan at the moment is to look at the Leger as long as I'm happy with him ? and he looks to be in superb form. He's in the Grand Prix de Paris but the Leger is for three-year-olds only, it's a Classic and at this stage that's where we're going.

“The owners said you only get one crack at a Classic and the worst that can happen is that he doesn't stay, he gets beaten and we put him away for the year. Whenever are we going to get a chance of having a go at a Classic with a really fancied runner?”

He added: “He'll be fully mature next year and he could end up being the best horse I've ever trained and I've had some nice ones ? Enforcer was rated 120 and we've had like Stepper Point and Averti winning Group 2 races.

“We haven't quite got our head in front in a Group 1 and if he can do that he's got to go to the top of the tree.”
