Marcus Tregoning says he would like to see a potential showdown between Mohaather and Palace Pier at Ascot on British Champions Day.
The Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned Mohaather, who is trained by Tregoning, landed the Betfred Summer Mile Stakes at Ascot on July 11 before then scoring in the Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood 18 days later.
John Gosden‘s Palace Pier racked up a fifth straight victory when claiming the spoils in Sunday’s Jacques le Marois at Deauville and there has been huge anticipation over a potential clash in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on October 17 between the colt and Mohaather.
Speaking about the potential of a meeting on British Champions Day, Tregoning said he would like to see this happen and is hoping the ground conditions are right for both charges.
“Palace Pier won well on very difficult ground and proved he’s a very nice horse,” he was quoted as saying by the Racing Post. “Getting these good horses to meet is what’s it’s all about and we’ll see what’s what then.
“It’s always very difficult [on Champions Day] as the ground can go like it did last year and become more of a slog, and that would be the only question mark about the day.
“Sometimes it can be okay and let’s just hope we can have it on good ground and make it a bit more worthwhile a race.”
