Yorkshire trainer David O’Meara admits it was a proud moment after he recorded his 1000th win as a flat trainer.
O’Meara, whose stable is located in Upper Helmsley near York, was left celebrating on Tuesday as Sudona won the Sports and Education Foundation Handicap at Pontefract.
Having only been a trainer for the last 10 years, he is now the second-fastest to reach the landmark in the UK after Richard Hannon junior.
Sudona proved too much for Zlatan to win by a length, with stable jockey Danny Tudhope picking the perfect path after being handed an inside draw.
O’Meara, who has eight victories at Group One level, could not hide his delight when he spoke to the Press Association.
He said: “I’m absolutely delighted.
“It’s been ten years and a month since we first took out a licence.
“When you first start out, you don’t think you’ll get this number at all. Obviously, in the last nine months or a year, I knew it was getting close. It’s great.
“It’s been a good ten years. Hopefully, the next ten years will be as good.”
