Andrew Balding says Derby success at Epsom is his “No.1 goal” with his stable star Kameko primed for Saturday's Classic.
The Kingsclere-handler has the race in his blood, with his father Ian having trained Mill Reef to Derby glory in 1971.
Balding has over 1,400 worldwide winners on his CV but success in this race has eluded him. However, things could change on Saturday with Kameko arguably the one to beat after last month's 2,000 Guineas win.
Oisin Murphy has again been booked to ride and connections are understandably excited about his chances of backing up his Newmarket success.
The 47-year-old trainer is confident that Kameko provides him with a live chance of success in a race he admits he has a burning ambition to win.
“It's the No. 1 goal,” Balding told Betway. “It's the Holy Grail. I think any person training Flat horses would have a void in their CV if they finished their career and they hadn't won the Derby.
“There's no way we've a candidate as strong as Kameko before. It's hugely exciting to go there with a Guineas winner. It's taken 10 years really to work yourself into a position to get you hands on horses of this calibre.”
