Franconia, ridden by Frankie Dettori, won the Abingdon Fillies’ Stakes at Newbury and could now be set for a crack at the Oaks next month.
The John Gosden-trained filly, on only her second run, went off the 7/4 favourite and secured a comfortable three-and-three-quarter length victory, with Roger Varian’s Cabaletta finishing second.
Franconia took the lead from the two-furlong pole and Dettori never looked in any trouble on the Frankel filly, securing yet another Listed success for the Italian and Gosden’s charge now looks set to head to Epsom for her next run.
When asked afterwards about the ride, Dettori – who also rode a winner at Newbury on Friday, admitted: “She’s a handful but she’s got a big engine. She showed a good turn of foot.”
Franconia has been cut into 12/1 by some bookmakers for the Oaks, with John Gosden looking like he has two big chances of success on July 4, after a trial win for Miss Yoda at Lingfield last week.
