Jockey Club begin Epsom Derby plans

The Jockey Club has submitted a proposal to the local council as to how they would stage at , if they can race in July.

The Epsom Classics, the and the , are provisionally scheduled in for July 4 – between 2pm and 5.50pm – with both races planned to take place on the same Saturday, along with five other races.

The Jockey Club though has had to request special dispensation from the local Epsom and Ewell council to run both races on the same day, with main issues seemingly having to close the public area of the surrounding of the Downs.

In order to stage the meeting, the racecourse will need a big exclusion zone around the local area and a decision on whether that is possible is expected to be announced next week.

Speaking the BBC, Liberal Democrat councillor David Gulland stated: “The plans seem sensible on paper and if the Jockey Club explains why it has to go ahead in this way, the local residents will support it ? if it's done the right way. But it needs the open communication as to why it has to be done this way.

“The paper is quite broad, it explains why the race has to happen to support the whole industry but it doesn't go into detail about why that's the case.”
