O’Brien hoping for May resumption

Aidan O'Brien is hopeful will return next month and praised the authorities for how they've handled the coronavirus-forced postponement.

The top trainer has been trying to keep things ticking over at his stables as he awaits the resumption of racing in both Britain and Ireland, hopefully sooner rather than later.

O'Brien is well aware there are more important things to consider at the moment but knows when the time is right the action will be back.

The British Authority announced last week that they were extending the suspension for an indefinite period but chief executive Nick Rust made it clear the was “ready” to return as “soon as we are clear with our daily discussions with the government” on when it's safe to do so.

And now O'Brien has insisted he can envisage a situation when races are being run again some time in May, although it is highly likely meetings will be staged behind closed doors, at least to begin with.

He told the Racing Post: “Obviously you would be hoping we would be back in May. Whether that is early May, the middle of May or late May I do not know. I don't really know for sure, though, and it's up to the authorities.

“The only thing I would say that everybody in charge so far has done a terrific job. They have managed everything very well.”
