Richard Fahey feels
trainers have to be ready to race again at short notice and is desperate for
the Flat season to start.
The North Yorkshire-handler, who has trained over 2,500 winners over the jumps
and on the flat, is counting down the days until his horses are able to get
back on the track, as sport continues to suffer during the coronavirus
pandemic.
All racing is suspended until at least the end of April and it’s unclear when
it will return, but when it is safe to start again, Fahey says everyone should
be ready to go when officials decide its safe for racing to resume.
Speaking to the Racing Post, Fahey insisted: “I understand it’s an
extremely difficult situation, but if we don’t make any plans then we definitely
won’t race.
“We’re in a position, just like everyone, where we have a lot of horses to
run and if it’s deemed to be safe and everyone is happy to race, then we
should.”
When racing is given the go-ahead, Fahey – who has over 200 horses at his stable
– has called on the fixtures to be consistent and feels the use of all-weather
tracks will be important.
The trainer added: “What we need is consistency and at Newcastle we can
race every day. Hamilton is also a good track and if we can get a couple of meetings
on there a week then brilliant ? but you can’t see them racing there every day,
whereas on the all-weather tracks you can.”
