Grand National a big hit with TV racing fans

Audience figures for the 2019 Randox Health rose by more than a million viewers year on year with almost 10 million tuning into ITV to see win historic back to back victories following success last year.

The Randox Health Grand pulled in a peak of 9.6m viewers, a 12% increase from 8.5m in 2018 with the average audience for the ITV Grand National show also up from 5.1m to 5.4m.

The average Opening Show figure on ITV4 on Saturday was up 71% from 141k in 2018 to 242K in 2019. The peak was up 73% from 176k to 305k year on year.

The ITV team broadcast nearly 14 hours of coverage of the Randox Health Grand National 2019. 

The performance across the rest of the Festival was also significantly strong with both and drawing the highest average audiences since records began in 2002. Averages were up year on year on Thursday by 17% (754k to 888k) and peak up by 14% (1.095m to 1.259m). On Friday, the average was up by 17% (874k to 1.031m) and peak up by 9% (1.150m to 1.262m). The audience share of 13% on Thursday was also the highest since 2002 (when 15.7% watched) and on Friday the share of 15.7% was the highest since records began in 2002. ITV’s social content was also a hit this year, allowing people to engage with the Festival on multiple platforms. Over the Festival there were 4.4 million video views on social media with over 880,000 minutes of content viewed. There were 7 million impressions over the three days. 

The team led by Ed Chamberlin and Francesca Cumani (recently jointly awarded Broadcast Sports Presenter of the Year at the SJA Awards), included Sir Anthony McCoy, Oli Bell, Mick Fitzgerald, Alice Plunkett, Brough Scott, Matt Chapman, Chris Hughes, Luke Harvey, Rishi Pershad, Brian Gleeson and lead commentator, Richard Hoiles.  Bryony Frost joined the team on Friday and Saturday and Good Morning Britain’s Charlotte Hawkins and Lorraine’s Mark Heyes joined the team on .
