Cracksman is set to contest the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York next month and could then head to the St Leger.
The John Gosden-trained three-year-old came in second in the Irish Derby last weekend and connections are plotting their next move.
Owner Anthony Oppenheimer has ruled out the King George at Ascot at the end of the month but confirmed the Voltigeur is a target, ahead of a potential tilt at the St Leger.
“It (the Voltigeur) is a race that would appeal as it would mean having another opportunity to run against three-year-olds,” he told reporters.
“He definitely won’t go to the King George as that would come too soon.
“I think the Voltigeur is a very sensible idea. If we did go to York, then he can either rest for the rest of the year and come back as a four-year-old, or we could look at something like that (St Leger).
“That’s a long way off, though, and we’ve not yet got to the bottom of this horse.
“I see no reason why we can’t get him back for a four-year-old campaign, with the big target being the King George next year.”
