Smullen backed ahead of Irish Derby bid

Trainer is confident Pat Smullen can fill the void left by Frankie when he partners Cracksman on Saturday.

Dettori had been set to take Cracksman’s reins in the Dubai Duty Free Irish but he is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Gosden and owner have now called on Smullen for Saturday’s race and the trainer has no concerns over the jockey’s ability.

“We have booked Pat Smullen,” he said, as reported by the Post. “He rode for us at Royal . He’s a good jockey.”

Smullen had three rides for Gosden at Ascot, including Westerland in the Chesham Stakes.
