Wings of Eagles, at 40/1, mowed them all down late to land the Derby at Epsom under the delighted Paddy Beggy.
Favourite Cracksman, with Frankie Dettori on board, and Cliffs Of Moher looked to be disputing matters before Aidan O’Brien‘s charge switched on the afterburners and roared to success right at the death.
Douglas Macarthur led them a furious pace, with The Anvil as company, but the leading duo were caught as they passed the two-furlong mark.
It seemed as though the favourite would prevail, but Dettori could find no more once Cracksman had been challenged and it was left to Wings of Eagles to land the Group One.
After the contest, Beggy said he felt he always had a chance on board one of the Irish handler’s horses.
“The main thing is you’re riding one of Aidan O’Brien’s so you don’t worry about the price, you’ve always got a chance,” he told ITV Sport.
“They went quick but I was drawn beside Ryan (Moore on Cliffs Of Moher) so I said I’d follow Ryan, who had probably the best horse going into the race.”
