The Grand National is set to be targeted for Don Poli as opposed to the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Gordon Elliott has revealed.
The Meath-based trainer spoke out on his plans for the seven-year-old after he was pulled up by Barry Geraghty half a mile from home on his reappearance in the JNwine.com Champion Chase on Saturday.
Despite Don Poli winning twice at Cheltenham in the past and finishing third in last year’s Gold Cup for previous trainer Willie Mullins, Elliott is looking at Aintree next April instead of March’s Festival.
He said: “He didn’t want to go from the first fence so I don’t know. I’d say Grand National but we’ll get him home and see.”
