Adam Ryan, assistant to trainer Kevin Ryan, says The Grey Gatsby is in good form ahead of the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket.
The son of Mastercraftsman made his seasonal reappearance in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot last month and ran a cracker on unsuitably soft ground to finish fourth behind My Dream Boat.
The five-year-old has been a superb servant for connections over the years, having won the French Derby, and also scalped dual Derby hero Australia in the Irish Champion Stakes two seasons ago.
The Grey Gatsby steps up to one-and-a-half miles for the first time in his career and faces a decent field at Newmarket that includes last year’s winner Big Orange and Sir Michael Stoute‘s Exosphere, who has to give weight away to the field.
However, The Grey Gatsby will get his favoured fast ground on Thursday and Ryan is confident he can go close.

He exclusively told Beforetheoff.com: “We were delighted with his return at Ascot, he ran a very good race.
“He travelled well into the contest but then just couldn’t pick up in the soft ground and that was what we were afraid of but he needed to start his season and that run has put him spot on now for the rest of the year.
“He always come on for his first run and he looks in great order since so we are very happy with him.
“It does look a good renewal at Newmarket but we couldn’t be happier with our lad. His season will revolve around the ground now and the Juddmonte will be the most likely race after Newmarket.”
The Ryan team send a strong team to the July Cup meeting which includes King‘s Stand Stakes third Goken who is going for the feature race on Saturday.
