There was no fairytale ending to Brian Toomey‘s riding career as he was brought down in his final race at Stratford on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old suffered an horrendous fall from Solway Dandy at Perth in July 2013 and actually ‘died’ for six seconds only to return to riding last July.
He was placed in an induced coma and underwent surgery to reduce swelling on his brain which included the removal of part of his skull.
The talented jockey spent more than five months in hospital but recovered to the extent where he restarted his career last summer.
However, he struggled to find enough rides and made the decision to call time on his career, with Tuesday’s race his final competitive outing.
There was to be no happy ending for jockey or horse as the Phil Kirby-trained City Dreams had to be put down after parting company with Toomey at the fourth.
He was not injured in the incident but will end his career on a negative note after fighting so hard to get back in the saddle.
