Lumiere and Buratino are both set to return to sprinting after their disappointing outings at Newmarket over the weekend.
Trained by Mark Johnston, the Godolphin-owned pair were both tipped to do well in the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas respectively but never featured in the showpiece races.
Lumiere was last of 16 in Sunday’s 1000 Guineas and John Ferguson, Godolphin’s chief executive and racing manager, admits there will now be a change of direction for the filly.
“We feel she should go back to where we know she has excelled, and that is over a sprint distance,” he said. “She will be entered for the Group One Commonwealth Cup, and probably also the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot.”
Buratino was ninth in the 2,000 Guineas the day before but failed to get the trip and will also drop back in distance next time out.
“He didn’t stay, and therefore we feel the best target at the Royal meeting will be the Group One Commonwealth Cup, over six furlongs,” added Ferguson.
“He is a course-and-distance winner (having won last year’s Coventry Stakes).”
