Trainer Dermot McLoughlin thinks Vics Canvas can make an impact in the Crabbie’s Grand National next month despite his advancing years.
The 13-year-old gelding is being prepared for the Aintree showpiece on April 9 and will likely be among a whole host of horses fancied to have a good each-way chance in the big race.
McLoughlin’s charge, whose biggest win to date came in the Cork Grand National back in 2014, finished a disappointing sixth in his last run-out at Fairyhouse last month but the trainer says he’s in good shape.
Despite advancing years, the Old Vic gelding is still pleasing his Ratoath trainer and all roads lead to Liverpool on April 9.
“Vics Canvas is on target for the National. He’s a bonny little horse and has a nice weight at 10st 6lb. He’s 13 but is still pleasing us,” he said.
“He’s got experience of the fences and ran well in the Becher this season.”
