Many Clouds will miss the Hennessy Gold Cup on the back of his seasonal debut display at Wetherby, Trevor Hemmings has confirmed.
The Grand National winner put in a satisfactory performance with a sixth-placed finish behind Cue Card in the Charlie Hall Chase on Saturday.
However owner Hemmings believes that a trip to Newbury for the race on November 28 is not a possibility and next year’s Grand National is the target.
Hemmings told Racing UK: “As much as our trainer (Oliver Sherwood) would have liked to have taken him there you can’t expect a horse to carry 16lb more weight than he carried last time in a race as competitive as that and expect him to come out unscathed.
“I think the horse has served us well over the last 12 months and maybe we should look at the National and work back from there. Let him learn his jumping again and bring him to his peak, hopefully for a Grand National run.”
