Kevin Ryan‘s colt The Grey Gatsby has emerged as a potential target for the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland on October 31.
The four-year-old finished a disappointing sixth when defending his Irish Champion Stakes crown at Leopardstown last time out but the unfavourable ground has been partly blamed for the result.
Gatsby has failed to record a victory in his previous six races but Adam Ryan, who is the North Yorkshire trainer’s son and assistant, believes a step up in trip could be the right option and the meeting in the US is a possibility.
“Looking at it, you’d say he’s crying out for a mile and four (furlongs) now,” he said. “There’s the Breeders’ Cup Turf to think about, but it’s up to dad and Frank Gillespie (owner).
“He’s had a long, hard season so we’ve got to do what’s right by the horse.”
Despite not winning in 2015, Ryan’s charge was runner-up in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown before finishing third in the Juddmonte International at York.
