As the build up to this year’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes continues, Golden Horn has been tipped to take the honours.
Golden Horn’s trainer John Gosden is quietly confident of another victory for his charge, saying his colt is ready for the task ahead.
“He just seems that much more streetwise, harder and tougher now,” he said.
Despite his confidence, Gosden is well aware the field for Saturday’s contest is packed full of quality, although he has picked out one rival in particular as the one Golden Horn needs to beat, saying: “Snow Sky is the one we have to beat.”
Golden Horn is looking to become just the fourth horse to win the Derby, Coral-Eclipse and King George.
Meanwhile, legendary jockey Joe Mercer has tipped him to pick up the win at Ascot this weekend, 40 years after he himself lost out in what was described as the ‘race of the century’ when Grundy pipped him and Bustino.
He told the Star: “I feel very proud to be associated with the race because it was the race of the century. I’ve not seen anything to match it since.
“If I was riding in this year’s race, Golden Horn is the one I would like to be on. They will not see which way he went.
“He reminds me of Brigadier Gerard who I won the race on.”
