Champion jockey Oisin Murphy is targeting further success after riding the 1000th winner of his career in Britain earlier this week.
The 25-year-old guided Perfect Sign to victory in a Novice Stakes at Southwell on Tuesday to reach the milestone and it is his latest achievement after being crowned champion apprentice in 2014 before claiming the senior riders’ title for the first time last year.
Murphy appears to be on target to retain that title this season as he is 10 winners ahead of nearest challenger William Buick with less than two weeks of the campaign remaining.
The Irishman’s success during his career has been built from the support of trainer Andrew Balding, while he has been riding for Qatar Racing since 2016.
Perfect Sign is a Qatar Racing-owned horse and Murphy feels it was fitting he secured his landmark win in their colours, while he is already turning his attention to the next 1,000.
“I ride for great people and it’s really nice to ride my 1,000th winner in Britain in these colours for Qatar Racing and Sheikh Fahad,” Murphy told Sky Sports Racing.
“When you start out as an apprentice you hope you can get a licence and then ride a winner and so on.
“Hopefully I can ride 1,000 more in the future. I ride good horses all over the world and I’m very privileged to do that.”
