Andrea Atzeni will partner Highland Chief in the Investec Derby on Saturday, trainer Paul Cole has confirmed.
The three-year-old is one of the outsiders for next weekend’s race, but Cole wants the experienced Atzeni on board to give his charge every possible chance.
The colt now has two wins from four races after winning at Royal Ascot earlier this month.
Highland Chief came from almost last to first to win the Golden Gates Handicap, with jockey Rossa Ryan guiding him home.
Cole won the Derby in 1991 with Generous, and he believes Atzeni’s wisdom in the big race will be invaluable.
He told Racing TV: “We’ve got Andrea Atzeni, he’s taken the ride.
“Obviously Rossa is a very good jockey, but on the big occasion like this, you really need someone who has the experience and Andrea has an amazing record at Epsom.
“Having him on board is a real bonus as no one will give an inch, and Andrea seems to scrape through everywhere on everything.”
Epsom will once again host the race and clerk of the course Andrew Cooper has said the current condition of the track is “perfect”.
