Silvestre de Sousa insists he still has plenty of work to do if he is to retain his Flat jockeys’ championship crown.
De Sousa has a healthy lead after an incredible 37 winners so far this month but the Brazilian is taking nothing for granted.
“It has been a good month as I’ve been going to meetings for four or five rides every day and I’m very lucky the good rides have come at the same time,” he said at Wolverhampton on Monday, as reported by the Racing Post.
“My agent Shelley Dwyer is doing a good job ? I’ve ridden for trainers who haven’t used me in the past ? we’re working hard and hopefully it will pay off later in the season.
“It’s nice to win the championship once but twice would be even better and, all being well, I’ll be going right through to the end of the season.”
De Sousa has 20 more winners than his closest rival Ryan Moore but he says there is still time for the other contenders to close the gap.
He added: “I still don’t think I should be favourite as although I’m freelance I have connections to please and go where they want me to go.
“I think William Buick has got a great chance and last year’s winner Jim Crowley is in a good position as well and there’s still a long way to go.”
De Sousa is in action at Leicester on Tuesday partnering Maksab, Flying Fantasy, Channel Packet and Shining Romeo.
