Cawley set for specialist visit

Jockey Alain Cawley is due to see a specialist on as he continues to recover following a nasty shoulder injury.

Cawley fell from Surf And Turf at the ninth fence in a handicap chase over two-and-a-quarter miles at in October.

The Irish-born jockey dislocated both shoulders and although the right has fully recovered, he still has issues with the other one.

He was expected to be out for six to eight weeks, but has gone well over the expected timeframe and admits he has no date set for a return.

Cawley said: “The right one is 100 per cent and has been since before Christmas. The left one I did 80 per cent nerve damage and fractured it as well.

“They are happy the nerves are working and the muscle is firing, it’s just pretty locked up at the moment. If it had been like my right one, I would have been back before Christmas.

“I go back to see the specialist on Monday. I’ve been to Oaksey House at least three or four times a week in the gym and with the physio. There is no date to come back yet, though.

“I was having a good season. I wouldn’t have summer trainers to ride for and I said if I got five winners by September I would be flying. I had six in May and 11 by the end of September.”
