Jockey Paul Carberry admits he was “gutted” to retire from National Hunt racing after taking advice from doctors.
The 42-year-old has not ridden competitively since breaking his left femur when falling from Rich Coast at Listowel last September.
The Irishman had hoped to return to the saddle but, after consultation with experts, it became obvious that his time in the sport was up.
“I saw my surgeon today and he advised me to stop,” he told told Press Association Sport. “My leg’s not strong enough. I feel gutted.”

Carberry enjoyed a superb career on both sides of the Irish Sea, wining 14 races at the Cheltenham Festival, while he claimed the biggest prize if all, the Grand National, on board Bobbyjo in 1999.
His career began back in 1990 and he confessed that winning at Aintree was his greatest achievement.
“The highlight definitely has to be winning the Grand National on Bobbyjo,” he added. “There’s been lots of other great moments on horses like Dorans Pride, Harchibald, Solwhit and Florida Pearl.
“I don’t know yet what I’ll do. I’m breaking a few horses in to start with.”
