Bogart set for mid-season break

The son of Tagula was an impressive winner of the Derby Trial in May and then went on to finish a highly-respectable fifth in the one month later.

Humphrey Bogart also ran at in the Edward VII Stakes and, although he could only finish sixth in the race, was just three-and-a-quarter lengths behind winner Across The Stars.

The three-year-old was again quickly turned out for the Grade 1 Belmont Derby in New last weekend. He was sent off 5/1 second-favourite for the affair but Sean Levey could only steer the colt to ninth place in the contest which was taken by ‘s Deauville.

After already having six races this season, Hannon will now keep Humphrey Bogart off the track for some time and likely bring him back for an Autumn campaign.

The Wiltshire handler told his website: “State Side was the turn of Humphrey Bogart in the Belmont Derby. He was settled towards the rear of the field and finished off nicely in the straight.

“He is very game whenever he runs, and he stayed on nicely with the majority of the field finishing tightly bunched.

“He is a really genuine horse and always puts his best foot forward. He ran a nice race in America but I will bring him home and possibly look at giving him a bit of time to get over his early season excursions.”
