Trip To Paris at 12/1 stayed on best to win the Ascot Gold Cup, after being supplemented for the race.
Connections paid £35,000 as a late entry for the Ed Dunlop-trained gelding following his Chester Cup success last month and it was an investment handsomely rewarded after the four-year-old came home in front under Graham Lee. The Grand National winning jockey moved his mount to the far rail where he enjoyed a perfect run.
For once, luck didn’t go the way of Ryan Moore as the meeting’s top jockey was denied a clear passage on his mount Kingfisher who was forced to check his run, and he stayed on late to snatch the runner up spot at 5/1 with 5/2 favourite Forgotten Rules third.
Lee said: “He gave me a great ride, he was so switched off and relaxed.
“He races that way, just conserving his energy. He deserved it.”
