The Two Mile Champion Chase and the Cheltenham Gold Cup are two of the best and most important races of the whole season and their rolls of honour run long, deep and proud.
Unfortunately the abyss between two miles at one end of the spectrum and 3¼miles at the other left many fantastic horses without a viable target as their specialist distance fell between these two posts. A lot of people mock the Ryanair Chase, whose first incarnation in 2005 was sponsored by The Daily Telegraph, but there can be no doubt that it serves its purpose....
