Flat trainer James Tate believes Far Above has a very bright future ahead of him and can be dominant over five furlongs this year.

The three-year-old managed three wins last year, triumphing at Newmarket and Windsor before a very impressive success in the Kistena Listed Stakes at Deauville in July.

Tate has high hopes for the sprinter, who he says is “going places” and is excited what 2020 holds for him, when the racing eventually resumes.

The trainer admits Far Above’s best distance could be five furlongs and the Temple Stakes at Haydock, scheduled for May 23, remains a viable target at this stage, although it’s unclear if Flat racing will be back on by then.

He told Sporting Life: “He’s a sprinter going places. He was quite weak as a two-year-old but looked like a horse with a big future last year, ending up winning a listed race in France.

“He won over seven and six furlongs last year but I think we’ll see the best of him dropped back to five furlongs as he looks to be getting quicker. He’s done really well over the winter and I think he’s a horse with a lot of ability.”

He added: “We were going to start him off in the Temple Stakes at Haydock and we’ll have to wait and see whether or not that happens. I’m really looking forward to seeing him over five furlongs and think he will be contesting the big group races over the minimum trip this year.”
