It’s a competitive day at Bangor today and there will be plenty of form lines to follow for the next few weeks I’m sure. I make HUNTERS CALL the best bet of the day as he bids to repeat his victory in the 3.05 handicap hurdle. He oozed class in this race last year as he eased away from a competitive field by 9 lengths. From there he enjoyed a decent season, competing at a much higher level and remaining competitive. Back down in handicap company and off a lower mark than when he won last year he looks a sound each way bet at 17/2.
Loyal readers of this column will know how much I rate SAINT PALAIS and I think he is a bet today at 2/1. Richard Bandey is building himself a good reputation as a trainer, partly due to his stable star. I expected him to continue excelling over fences like he did last season but as he is only a 5 year old, connections have decided to have a season over hurdles with him. It could be quite a smart plan if it works out as I think he can rack up a few of these staying novice hurdles. It looks like most of his rivals are using this as a bit of a prep for a bigger target down the line whereas I expect the selection to be tuned up and ready to strike.
