It is the beginning of the Chester May Festival today and I expect the ground to turn softer as the day goes on given the amount of rain that is expected. It is unknown whether or not NIGHT BATTLE will prefer the softer ground or not but she was such an impressive winner on debut I find it hard not to back her here. Held up in a steadily run race she produced a sharp turn of foot and won comfortably at Lingfield last time which was a performance that certainly caught my eye. At 7/2 she looks worth a punt in an open renewal of the race.
In the 3.40 I think SELBY’S PRIDE is overpriced given the form she has in the book. The softer ground shouldn’t hold any fears for her and the step up to 6f should really suit. A bad draw isn’t ideal but I do advise everyone to remember a good break is just as important so if Paddy Mathers can get her out in good time I hope the she can overcome the draw bias.
