Andy Newton looks at York’s famous race
Run over 1m2f at York racecourse, the John Smith’s Cup (originally the Magnet Cup) is one of the first races the well-known brewery decided to sponsor back in 1960. They have stuck loyally to the contest ever since making this now the longest running association with a Flat race in the world.
Run this year on July 9, the race attracts a lot of runners – 12 months ago we saw 22 runners head to post – with the contest won by the William Haggas-trained Sinjaari, which was the yard’s third win in the race since 2011.
