They say if you want to haemorrhage money quickly, own a boat….or a racehorse! Historically, owning racehorses has been the preserve of the rich but over the last three decades, there has been a move towards syndicates and partnerships, bringing more people into ownership. It is therefore perhaps no surprise that these days over half of the 14,000 horses in training in Britain are owned by two or more people, a reflection of the growing trend away from single towards multiple ownership.
