The changes to both the fences and race conditions of the Grand National have not, I believe, resulted in any significant improvement in the quality of steeplechaser running in the great race. Indeed very few Cheltenham Gold Cup contenders are even entered.
There may well be an overall improved standard of horse in the 2018 Grand National from, say 1982, at least by official rating, yet even with £1m prize purse the very best chasers do not contest the greatest race in the world...
