O’Brien targets Group
1 outing
Trainer Joseph O’Brien says Patrick Sarsfield will be heading for a Group 1
race earlier than expected.
Patrick Sarsfield is in fantastic form at the moment and he made it four wins
on the spin last Saturday when claiming the spoils at Leopardstown in the Group
3 Meld Stakes, beating Ancient Spirit by two lengths.
That was the four-year-old’s first time competing outside of handicap company
and the level of performance in that victory has connections thinking about a
potential step into a Group 1 race.
Speaking about his charge being upped in class, O’Brien said, as quoted by the
Racing Post: “Patrick Sarsfield was very good on Saturday and we might be
forced to look for a Group 1 for him sooner rather than later.
“I’ll try to find the most suitable one for him to go to and we might
travel outside of Ireland with him.
“I always thought he was a nice horse and would end up running in Group
races, but you never expect a horse to go through the grades so quickly. He has
a lot of options now and we might travel with him.”
