Trainer Paul Tate says Newmarket could be the smart choice when it comes to selecting a venue for the return of horse racing.
Racing in Britain is currently suspended until the end of April due to the global coronavirus pandemic but there are growing hopes that a return to action could take place as early as May 1.
Last Friday, the Resumption of Racing Group issued a letter stating work was being done to make sure racing could take place from the start of May while observing any social distancing guidelines and not putting extra strain on the health service.
One idea that has grown in popularity is the suggestion of regional racing centres, with tracks in the north, midlands and south selected to host consecutive meetings over a sustained period of time.
One venue suggested as meeting the needs for all stakeholders upon racing's return is Newmarket and Tate is confident the Rowley Mile course could be the perfect place for the action to resume.
“I would be behind racing returning to Newmarket – because with everything applied, it would be a sensible place to have a meeting before anywhere else,” said Tate, who is based in Newmarket.
“You could run a meeting with Newmarket-based trainers, and only use professional jockeys, and that could just be Newmarket-based ones because nobody would have to travel far or stay over either.”
