Cowell blames heat for Goldream’s struggles

Trainer Robert Cowell believes ‘s struggles in ‘s ‘s Stand Stakes at was due to the hot weather.

The eight-year-old had been highly-fancied to challenge for overall glory having previously won the race in 2015, but he was unable to keep pace with the leaders, eventually finishing eight-and-a-half-lengths behind winner Lady Aurelia.

Cowell put the brown gelding’s lacklustre display down to the hot weather, although he conceded his charge would have still struggled to beat Lady Aurelia even if he had been at his best.

“It was a very hot day, he’s a black horse and I think he just melted in the heat,” Cowell said. “There was nothing outwardly wrong with him, I just think the heat got to him.

“He should have had a turn of foot off that kind of pace and even though he wouldn’t have got anywhere near Lady Aurelia, he should have been in the shake-up with the others.”

Cowell has now revealed that Goldream’s next run could come in the Coral Charge at , although that is not the horse’s only option.

He added: “We might look at the Coral Charge (at Sandown) for him and there are all those usual sprints as options.”
