Team sweat over Massaat fitness

Owen Burrows has confirmed Massaat will undergo further tests to try and understand why he underperformed at last week.

The Sovereign Stakes was expected to be the ideal race for the runner, who had previously finished second in the 2,000 Guineas.

However, it was a disappointing run for Massaat, who fell away having led and trainer Burrows says the inquest into what went wrong is still ongoing.

He said: “Nothing mechanical has come to light. He was not lame or anything like that. We are just going to do some internal tests on him now over the next week to make sure everything is at as it should be.

“We will have to wait and see what the specialists find but it is hard to say if he will come back as he was, but we hope and pray he does.”
