Aidan Coleman is already looking forward to the 2016 Grand National when he hopes he will be on a live contender.
The jockey believes last month’s Welsh Grand National winner Emperor’s Choice could be an ideal contender by then.
The seven-year-old bravely battled back to beat Benvolio by a short head, despite not jumping fluently in last month’s Chepstow marathon.
He appeared to get every yard of Chepstow’s 3m5f in testing conditions and was winning for the seventh time from 26 career starts having previously not run any sort of race at Sandown over the same trip.
The Venetia Williams-trained Flemensfirth gelding may next be seen in Haydock‘s Grand National trial but will bypass the big race itself at Aintree this year, whilst he improves his jumping.
“He won’t be running in the big race itself this year,” Coleman told Racing UK in his column.
“I just don’t think his jumping is up to it yet. He didn’t cope well with the Sandown fences in the London National and he did make mistakes, including a bad one at the ditch at Chepstow.
“With another season of jumping under his belt, he will hopefully be a contender for the 2016 Crabbie’s Grand National.”
