Nothing dampens an exhilarating day at the races quite like a queue that just won’t budge.
Racegoers attend the races for the thrill of competition and the electric atmosphere, not to have their patience tested.
Whether it’s waiting for facilities, refreshments, placing a bet, or simply entering the venue, long delays can take the shine off the experience.
To uncover where racegoers face the longest waits, the team at
BoyleSports analysed thousands of Tripadvisor and Google reviews to identify the UK’s racecourses with the most complaints about queues.
While these venues deliver world-class racing and vibrant crowds, managing large attendances remains a challenge.
Official data submitted by British racecourses to the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) recorded a total of 4,799,730 attendees across race meetings in 2024.
Though this was a slight drop from 2023, the average attendance per meeting rose from 3,392 to 3,404 – meaning facilities must accommodate thousands at any given time.
Here’s a look at the racecourses where queues have caused the most frustration.
1. Newmarket – 3.71%
Famed as the home of British horse racing, Newmarket might be steeped in history, but modern racegoers appear to be growing impatient with its crowd management.
With nearly 4% of all reviews highlighting issues with queues, it tops the list for racecourse congestion woes.
A Tripadvisor user criticised the overcrowding at Newmarket, stating: “Far too many people crammed in this time, normally a great day out but really disappointed.
The Premier enclosure was rammed full of people, bar queues were terrible and the toilets too.
“Meanwhile, a Google reviewer echoed similar frustrations, commenting: “Crazy queues for EVERYTHING, really poorly trained bar staff serving everything in plastic and getting home is an absolute nightmare…”
2. York – 2.29%
A staple of the flat racing calendar, York Racecourse is beloved for its stunning setting and top-class racing.
However, the numbers reveal a noticeable percentage of racegoers mentioning queues as a downside to the experience.
A Google user was particularly critical of the facilities, stating: “Toilets are disgusting and there aren’t enough and hour-long queue for drinks.” Another visitor acknowledged the racecourse’s enjoyable atmosphere but noted: “It’s always a good time here, especially when the weather is nice.
The only downside is the queues at the bars, toilets, and food stalls.”A Tripadvisor reviewer praised the venue but suggested improvements were needed, saying: “A beautifully clean and well played out racecourse.
Good food, drink and entertainment. If the problems with queues could be sorted out a little better, the place would be excellent.”
3. Doncaster – 2.17%
One of the biggest names in UK racing, Doncaster hosts the prestigious St Leger Festival, attracting thousands of eager punters.
However, reviews suggest that on big days, queues for facilities and refreshments can test visitors’ patience.
4. Goodwood – 1.76%
Glorious Goodwood may be a highlight of the summer racing calendar, but some visitors feel the experience is less than glorious when faced with long waits for drinks and amenities.
5. Cheltenham – 1.46%
As the home of jumps racing and the legendary Cheltenham Festival, which is fast approaching, this racecourse attracts massive crowds.
That sheer volume appears to result in queue-related complaints, particularly during peak events.
A Google reviewer praised Cheltenham Racecourse’s organisation, stating: “Considering the popularity, the queues are not too bad, both for toilets and bars.”
However, another visitor acknowledged the wait times contributing to a bad experience, commenting: “Worst race meet I’ve been to (Gold Cup day).
Way too many people for the venue, unbearable queues for everything including the toilets.”
Meanwhile, a Tripadvisor user highlighted the challenges of navigating the crowds, saying: “The place was jam-packed, everywhere you go you have to queue.
Every bar you go in, you can’t move, and you’re constantly being nudged as people try to get in and out.”
6. Ascot – 1.43%
Synonymous with prestige and tradition, Ascot remains one of the UK’s most famous racecourses.
But with large crowds come long waits, and reviews indicate that racegoers aren’t always happy with how efficiently queues are managed.
7. Ayr – 1.33%
Known as Scotland’s premier racecourse, Ayr hosts the famous Ayr Gold Cup.
While it offers a fantastic atmosphere, some attendees find themselves stuck in frustrating queues, according to reviews contributing to the data.
8. Aintree – 1.29%
Home of the Grand National, Aintree welcomes enormous crowds eager to witness one of the most famous steeplechases in the world.
While the event is an unmissable spectacle, queues could potentially force you to miss out on a race.
9. Epsom Downs – 0.80%
The home of The Derby fares better than most when it comes to keeping racegoers moving. Less than 1% of reviews highlight queue-related frustrations, making it one of the better performers in this area.
10. Sandown Park – 0.58%
With the lowest percentage of queue complaints among the racecourses analysed, Sandown Park appears to handle the flow of racegoers relatively well.
A Google reviewer of Sandown Park noted the efficient crowd management, stating: “Not too much queueing considering it was pretty busy.”
Another visitor echoed this sentiment, adding: “Lovely warm day, resulting in a good turnout of people, however still plenty of room around to move about. Hardly any queues for the food stands and bars.”
