Middleham mainstays could pass on Brocklesby bid

Mark Johnston’s son says the yard might not have an entry in the Brocklesby unless it cuts up before the race.

The Mark Johnston yard has won the traditional opening two-year-old race of the flat season for the past two years, with Ravenhoe beating eight rivals in 2015 and The Last Lion landing the spoils in 2016.

But despite having Faithful Promise entered this year, a large entry has led to the Middleham yard re-considering a hat-trick bid.

“It will be a decision for tomorrow morning,” said the trainer’s son and assistant Charlie Johnston on .

“There are 28 entries and 19 or 20 are jocked up so we might not run her.

“We’d like to keep the record going but we’ve got to do what’s best for her. She’s done plenty at home and has worked well. She’s ready to run but we’ll do what’s right for the horse, not our record.”
