High Bridge will be off to Cheltenham after an impressive display in winning a Novices’ Hurdle at Newbury on Saturday afternoon.
The six-year-old claimed the Read Paul Nicholls Exclusively At Betfair Novices’ Hurdle at Newbury by two and a quarter lengths, with Alan King‘s Azzerti back in second.
Jockey Alex Ferguson kept him prominent throughout and he had far too much speed after the final flight to crush his rivals and secure a spot at the Festival.
He now looks on course for the Supreme and winning trainer Ben Pauling confirmed that his charge will probably be in the line-up for the two-mile showpiece.
“He quickened very nicely off terrible ground, but he has got plenty toe as he is out of a Guineas winner (Ameerat),” he said.
“I think a true run two miles might suit him very well. You only change plans for a reason and I don’t see any need to do so.
“I think it would be quite brave to go into the unknown over two and a half. I think the Supreme is a bit more open as the Neptune looks quite hot.”
