KEW Gardens fulfilled his promise as a stayer by winning the St Leger at Doncaster – giving trainer Aidan O’Brien his 31st Classic success.
The Ballydoyle trainer had five of the 12-strong field and the Derby ninth proved that the 1m6f trip was ideal with a convincing victory.
Favourite Lah Ti Dar tasted defeat for the first time, having to settle for second after she struggled to go the early pace. That meant her challenge under Frankie Dettori came from a long way back and the line came too soon.
