Brando is 6/1 from 8s at BetVictor for next month's Haydock Sprint Cup after his scintillating win in the Gp 1 Prix Maurice Gheest at Deauville on Sunday. The disappointing favourite was Aidan O'Brien's Caravaggio and the colt must surely be stepped up in trip to at least seven furlongs on his next start – he has much to prove now, however, and I'm not convinced he and Ryan Moore are the ideal combination.
There is a good card at Chelmsford this evening and I'm interested in Sardenya (5.50) on his handicap debut for Roger Charlton in first-time cheek-pieces. The filly steps up in trip on her nursery debut and this daughter of Kodiac has improved with each run to date.
I hope it's a good night for the girls as I think Mail Order (6.20) can leave her debut run at Ffos Las behind with that experience under her belt for Mark Johnston. The booking of Jim Crowley would suggest a bold bid is expected and she receives plenty of weight from the previous winners.
Ashington is a likely sort on breeding for Luca Cumani and Jamie Spencer and a market move would be worth noting although the stable are yet to have a 2-year-old winner so far this term.
In the first of two valuable handicaps on the night, Mutarabby (6.50) can follow up his recent C&D success from a 7lbs higher mark. The selection came from an unlikely position to win on that occasion and he must break better than he did on that occasion from a good draw in stall five.
Casimiro and La Rav are two progressive three-year-old with a similar profile to the selection and they, too, have been given favourable low numbers in the draw.
Blushing Rose (7.20) looked to be crying out for a step back up in trip at Windsor last time when staying on when the bird had flown over a mile. The selection's sole win came on an all-weather surface and she is certainly bred to get today's ten-furlong trip. Cumani's Blind Faith looks to be getting her act together and a return to the scene of her debut C&D success should see her in a better light.
At Nottingham Mafaaheem (6.05) is hard to oppose back at 10f despite the fact that the colt has finished runner up on his three starts this season. Paul Mulrennan gets a rare ride in the blue and white silks of Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and he can see off the challenge of Roger Varian's well-bred Zeelander who has been off the track since finishing ninth of thirteen on debut over a mile here back in November.
For the same connections as Zeelander Jumira Prince (7.35) scored over C&D from a 7lbs lower mark back in June and he has continued to progress in recent starts. He was fitted with blinkers for his last start when second at Haydock and Roger Varian changes the headgear to a visor this evening.
Masterfilly (8.05) ran into a couple of well-handicapped improvers at Ffos Las last time and this grey filly gets the vote in the finale for Ed Walker who hit the bar at the weekend when his Aeolus finished runner up in the Stewards' Cup.
The Gp 3 Give Thanks Stakes is the feature event at Cork this evening and Eziyra (7.30) faces nothing of the class of Irish Oaks winner Enable and can confirm that improvement. The selection has only had six career starts and can give Dermot Weld a welcome Pattern race winner this season.
